They love him! Josh Thomas’ comedy Please Like Me is named one of the decade’s best international shows by New York Times

Comedian Josh Thomas is kicking off the new decade with a bang after his TV series Please Like Me was honoured by the New York Times this month.

The publication has listed the Australian comedy (which sees Josh in the starring role) as one of the top international shows of the decade.

The fiery-haired funnyman, who also co-wrote and co-directed the show, plays a 20-something named Josh who tries to navigate adulthood, his sexuality and family drama.

The series came 19th in the list, beating out international successes like Broadchurch (UK), Kingdom (South Korea) and The Returned (France).

To be included in the list, the show had to be a scripted series from this decade produced outside the United States but available to American audiences.

Please Like Me was the only Australian show listed, while British programs took up a massive 12 out of the 30 spots.

The Bureau (France), Sherlock (UK) and Prisoners of War (Israel) came third, second and first respectively.

It comes after Josh released a first-look trailer of his new US show Everything’s Gonna Be Okay earlier this month, as he celebrated the Australian streaming service Stan picking up the series.

Again, Josh created the show, also acting as a writer, executive producer and star of the comedy series, which is set and filmed in the US.

Success: The Australian series came 19th in the list, beating out international hits like British program Broadchurch (pictured), South Korean drama Kingdom and France's The Returned

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay follows ‘well-intentioned but ill-equipped characters, trying to find happiness in the middle of difficult times’.

The show tells the story of 25-year-old Nicholas who is a man still living at home with his single father and two half-sisters.

After his father becomes terminally ill, Nicholas must step up his game and take care of his family.

Truly international: Israel's Prisoners of War (pictured), France's The Bureau and the UK's Sherlock took the top three spots
